Without a point from five games, Viktoria Plzeň will finish bottom of UEFA Champions League (UCL) Group C, but the Czech side will be keen to avoid becoming the 23rd team in history to lose every one of their six matches in a group stage of the competition. Plzeň can also equal or even beat the record number of goals conceded in the group stage (24), which will happen if they concede four or more goals against FC Barcelona, as they did on matchday 1 (5-1).

A 3-0 win away to Zlin last Saturday, Plzeň are four points clear at the top of the Czech league with a game in hand, results that contrast with their dismal record in this year’s continental competition. After defeats at home to Inter (0-2) and Bayern (2-4), the club from the Czech Republic’s most brewing city can string together three home defeats in European competition for the first time.

On Plzeň’s visit to the Camp Nou almost two months ago, Robert Lewandowski scored three of Barça’s five goals, becoming the first player to score a hat-trick for three different clubs in the UCL. Much has changed since then for Barça, who have failed to win any of their next four matches in Group C (E1, P3), suffering back-to-back group stage eliminations for only the second time in their history. Relegated back to the Europa League, Barça will be looking to end a group stage to forget by maintaining their perfect record against Plzeň (G3), but it is worth remembering that the Blaugrana lost 3-0 on the final day of the last two editions of the UCL.

Barça, defeated away to Bayer and Inter, have lost in their last three UCL group stage outings. They have not lost four away defeats in this stage of the competition since October 1997, and it seems unlikely that such a run will be repeated on Tuesday, given that their three most recent UCL trips to the Czech Republic all ended in wins. Xavi’s side go into their final game with morale boosted after a hard-fought 1-0 win over Valencia at the Mestalla, cutting Real Madrid’s lead at the top of LaLiga (1st RM 32, 2nd FCB 31).
Key battle: Milan Havel provided an assist at home during the UCL qualifiers, but his main responsibility is defensive. The full-back will try to stop Ferran Torres, who has assisted and scored Barça’s last two goals against Plzeň.
Key stat: In 12 of Plzeň’s last 15 matches, the score at half-time (1X2) has remained unchanged after the second half.
